As industries continue to evolve, the need for skilled professionals is growing, especially in fields like welding, where precision and safety are paramount. Flint Systems , a leader in vocational training simulators, is addressing this demand with their innovative WELES welding simulator, powered by HTC VIVE XR Elite headsets and VIVE Ultimate trackers . This solution brings a new approach to welding training, combining the power of immersive XR technology with real-world precision.

Flint Systems partnered with the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone to create a scalable, realistic, and safe training environment. The challenge was clear: deliver an immersive VR-based welding training solution that could fit into a limited classroom space while maintaining the accuracy and realism needed to meet the demands of the welding industry.

Tackling Space Constraints and Precision

The project presented unique challenges. The space available for training stations was compact, and the system had to run across eight stations simultaneously. The challenge was not just fitting everything into the space but ensuring that the VR system operated smoothly and accurately. The HTC VIVE XR Elite headsets and trackers were essential in achieving this. They provided the high level of precision and tracking needed to mirror real-world welding scenarios in a limited environment.

"Developing the WELES welding simulator presented unique challenges, from limited space to integrating real hardware into the VR environment. Thanks to HTC's XR Elite and VIVE Ultimate trackers, we achieved the precision and immersion needed for effective vocational training. Their technology allowed us to create a scalable and realistic solution that meets industry demands and equips professionals with critical skills."

- Maciej Kniter, Marketing Manager at Flint Systems

Precision and Realism through Cutting-Edge Technology

At the core of the WELES welding simulator is the integration of real welding handles with a virtual environment. This setup ensures that the simulation remains as realistic as possible, offering users a truly immersive training experience. The system allows users to practice a range of welding techniques—MIG/MAG, SMAW, GTAW, and FCAW—across various positions and materials, including sheet metal, pipes, and fittings.

The WELES simulator stands out due to its integration of haptic gloves, which simulate the heat felt during welding, adding a sensory dimension to the experience. The HTC VIVE XR Elite headsets and trackers deliver precision tracking, ensuring the entire system functions flawlessly, from the movements of the welding handles to the adjustments of the welding parameters, such as gas flow, current, and voltage.

A Step Forward for Welding Education

The WELES welding simulator has been a key part of modernising welding training at the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone. By combining immersive XR technology with practical, real-world components, it provides a safer and more cost-effective alternative to traditional training methods. Trainees can hone their skills in a virtual environment that closely mirrors the demands of actual welding jobs, without the risks or costs associated with real-world training.

The system’s flexibility is one of its standout features, offering a variety of environments for trainees to practice in, from shipyards to industrial facilities. This adaptability ensures that the simulator can cater to a wide range of industries and skill levels.
