Simulator VR Mode FAQs

Consult the following FAQs for tips on using Simulator VR Mode.

Do I need additional software for motion compensation support?

No, Simulator VR Mode does not require additional software for motion compensation. In a Simulator VR Mode setup, motion compensation is handled by VIVE Focus 3.

In a typical VR motion simulator setup, motion compensation is required in order to distinguish the movement of the user from that of the simulator. Headset pose data alone can't distinguish between a user turning his or her head to the right or the entire simulator turning right. Motion compensation is required to differentiate the two movements.

When using a VR controller or wrist tracker as an anchor, the offset data for the headset and anchor is used to distinguish user movement from simulator movement. No additional software is required.

Can I use wrist trackers and controllers at the same time?

No, you cannot use wrist trackers and controllers at the same time. Currently, Simulator VR Mode only supports two use cases:

  • Headset + two VR controllers
  • Headset + two wrist trackers (with hand tracking enabled)

How should I install an anchor controller or tracker for the best tracking performance?

Follow these guidelines to optimize tracking performance when installing an anchor controller or wrist tracker:

  • Make sure the anchor controller or wrist tracker is at least 40 cm away from the headset.
  • When using a VR controller as an anchor, make sure the front of the controller faces the headset at all times.
  • When using a wrist tracker as an anchor, make sure the top side of the wrist tracker (where the Power button is) stays within the FOV of the headset. Any physical objects that come between the tracker and the headset may obstruct the FOV and reduce tracking performance.
  • Make sure the anchor controller or wrist tracker is properly secured in the simulator or vehicle.

Why doesn't hand tracking work with an anchor controller installed?

Hand tracking only works with VIVE Wrist Tracker. You can't use hand tracking if your headset is paired with VR controllers.

If you're using wrist trackers, but hand tracking still isn't working, make sure your environment is well-lit. Hand tracking works best in bright environments with uniform lighting.
